Tobacco Prevention and Cessation

Tobacco use can be prevented or reduced using different methods. The most effective approach includes written policy, counseling and medication to discourage tobacco use. One-on-one participation, such as individual, group or telephone counseling can be very effective, while nicotine replacement therapy or other prescription medications, covered through an employer health plan, is also important. Policies play an important role as well in limiting tobacco use and contact to secondhand smoke, and can be applied in varying levels of impact:

  • Smoking bans indoors and near entrances (low).
  • Campus-wide smoking bans (medium).
  • Campus-wide tobacco bans on all tobacco products, including e-cigarettes (high – best practice).
